Being ‘one of the crowd’ just isn’t enough when it comes to finding that perfect job in the construction, engineering and resources sectors.
You need to stand out, because no matter what the role, you’re probably not the only one with his or her name on the table. More importantly, you need to help us help you, because no matter how experienced our consultants we can only get your foot in the door.
It’s you who has to push it the rest of the way open.
Help us help you
Design & Build Recruitment’s experienced consultants can help you get your foot in the door, but if you want to open it the rest of the way you’ll need to take note of these hints for making a successful job application.
- Prepare a well-presented, concise CV.
The first page of your CV should grab the attention of any potential employer and should include your name, a short profile and details of your most recent position.
- Detail all employment positions.
Your CV should include details of all employment positions and your educational and training history, each in reverse chronological order.
- Length and formatting is important.
Your CV should be prepared in Microsoft Word format and should be no longer than 3 or 4 pages as an absolute maximum.
- Prepare a covering letter.
You should provide a covering letter or email stating why you are looking to leave your current position, your current package and your availability. The type of position you are looking to move in to is also important.
- Visa status (if applicable).
Overseas candidates should include current visa status for work in Australia.
- Make a single application.
Sending 25 CVs to the same recruitment consultancy will not mean that you have a better chance of securing the right role. Making a single application may speed up the process of finding a role that suits you.
- Register with one recruitment consultancy.
Registering with every recruitment company in town is a common mistake that can ultimately hinder your progress. Choose one company and work with them. Build a solid relationship so that your best interests are looked after. Ideally choose Design & Build Recruitment!
- Follow up your email with a phone call.
Speak with the relevant consultant. We receive hundreds of emails every day so set yourself out from the crowd and do the old fashioned thing: speak to us!
- Be honest.
Our consultant’s questions are tailored around getting the relevant information that will help you to secure the right role. We are not trying to trick you or find out confidential information. We genuinely need to know who you have interviewed with, which agencies you have met with and how much you earn!
- Allow 1 to 2 weeks.
Once you have attended an interview with your consultant, allow them 1 to 2 weeks to secure relevant interviews for you. Remember our progress is very much governed by our clients’ speed of response.
- Prepare for the interview.
Dress smartly. Allow plenty of time to get there. Have questions prepared and think about why you want the role before you attend.
- Call your consultant afterwards.
Honest feedback helps us help you. Your consultant will speak to the client once they have spoken to you and, providing both sides are positive, will help you to secure the right package and start date. Use your consultant's expertise in managing this process.
- Let your consultant know if you change your mind.
If you change your mind or decide something is not right, speak to your consultant as soon as possible. Do not go into hiding and avoid the issue. Most things can be fixed quickly and easily, and even if they can’t, you’re much better dealing with the situation than avoiding it.
