Why our newest consultant, Rebecca Cleaver, joined us at Design & Build

“Being already in recruitment, working with professionals in the real estate & property sector, I was looking for a change of work environment and agency. Specifically, I wanted to work in an agency that had similar values to my own, which is to deliver a high-level recruitment service to my clients and candidates.

Although I had a long family history in property (my Father was a 30-year real estate professional eventually becoming MD of a national Australian firm) I wanted to work in construction recruitment and so set about meeting a few agencies who specialise in this space.

For me, I’ve always found construction fascinating and interesting, it surrounds me in everyday life; I’m building a home right now, I look out my office window and I see construction, I commute to work and I see a Melbourne skyline dotted with cranes and construction workers at ground-level.

“I made a conscious decision to explore recruitment agencies to find the right company to work with, where I could grow and succeed.”

When I met Andy (Andrew McGregor Design & Build MD) and Tom (Tom Dumper, MD Public Sector People) they really understood my motivations for changing agencies and switching from residential real estate to construction recruitment. In our first catch up it was really clear both Andy & Tom were honest, outgoing professionals which I felt perfectly matched my personality. When they explained their vision for Design & Build and where I see my career heading, it was clear we were on the same page.

The most resonating value for me about Design & Build is their biggest value which is building trust; it’s what they want to be known for across the industry.

We want to be recognised as honest recruiters that people can trust in the advice we give and that we’re trying to do the right thing by the company and candidate. We're not here to put the wrong candidate forward just to get a deal.

So how was your first day in the office?

My first introduction to the team was their bowling night which was a great environment to get to know your new colleagues. My first reaction when I met them was… wow! everyone has an accent and I’m the only Aussie!

Given that I had already met my team, my first day in the office was a warming experience and not at all scary. But what it comes down to is, we are similar-minded people who are internally driven to be successful but also like to enjoy some fun together.

In the end, the decision was easy for me to join Design & Build. It is both my view, and D&B’s, that building trust is a long-term gain and that’s where our focus lies.
