There is a major infrastructure boom currently taking place in Sydney with a number of significant infrastructure projects- particularly with roads and public transport- being announced over the last few months. Many of these projects have been fast tracked, to not only help revitalise the NSW economy post COVID-19 and take both the state and the greater Sydney metropolitan region to the next level by global standards.

Some of these key projects are:

The Sydney Gateway

Thousands of jobs will be created as part of the toll-free Sydney Gateway motorway, with the NSW Government announcing this week (November 2) that the project - which will create a vital connection to Sydney Airport, Port Botany and beyond -has received planning approval from all levels of government.

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian has claimed in a recent press release that the Sydney Gateway will be a ‘game changer’ and because so, the NSW will be investing $2.6 billion into this project in order to improve the safety and reliability of Sydney’s motorway network and support an additional 1000 direct and 3000 indirect jobs.

Construction on the project is set to begin early next year and is expected to be completed by 2024 and Design & Build are already beginning to recruit for key areas of the project. See bleow for more details.

Sydney Metro

Sydney Metro is Australia’s biggest public transport project which will extend from Sydney’s north west region, under Sydney Harbour, through new underground city stations and on to the south west. The entire project is estimated to finish by 2024, and Sydney will have 31 metro railway stations in total and a 66km standalone metro railway system.

Stages of this project have either been completed or are already underway, such as Sydney’s Metro Northwest line- which officially opened last year- and will be extending into the Sydney CBD and beyond by 2024. The Sydney Metro City and Southwest lines are the next phases of the project which will include a 30 kilometre extension of metro rail from the end of Sydney Metro Northwest at Chatswood under Sydney Harbour, through new CBD stations and south west to Bankstown. The lines are expected to be completed by 2024 with seven new metro stations and 11 upgraded stations.

One of these CBD stations - Crow's Nest Station-has already been awarded a $370 million construction contract, according to the NSW Government. The New South Wales Minister for Transport and Roads, Andrew Constance has stated that the construction on the Crow's Nest station alone will create hundreds of new jobs, with more than 300 workers on site during peak phases of construction activity.  Develepments on the other five new metro stations are expected to continue in the coming months.

M6 Stage 1

The M6- Stage 1 road project has been labelled by NSW Transport as the ‘missing link’ in Sydney’s south to the wider Sydney motorway network and aimed at making journeys easier, faster and safer. In December 2019, the M6 Stage 1 received planning approval from the Department of Planning, Industry and Environment.

Construction of Stage 1 of the M6, is projected to commence in early 2022, and meanwhile construction has already started on upgrading community and sporting facilities at popular local parks at Rockdale and Brighton-Le-Sands surrounding the M6. The upgrades are expected to support 200 jobs approximately and allow local sporting teams to keep their seasons running as construction begins on the new toll road. The M6 itself is believed to create around 5,300 new jobs.
