We are delighted to announce that one of our dedicated engineering consultants and resident karaoke lover Sam Carew, was promoted to Lead Consultant last week! Since joining our Sydney office over three years ago, Sam has been a driving force in building our network within the civil infrastructure space and has worked with many reputable clients on recruiting for some significant national infrastructure projects. To celebrate this important milestone, we spoke to Sam about the upcoming opportunities he will be focusing on in his new role and his goals for the rest of 2021. See his answers below:
Congratulations Sam on this amazing achievement!
How did you first get involved In recruitment?
Well, I actually started on the other side of the fence and picked up some agency work as a labourer when I was on school holidays via the recruitment company my brother worked for. After about 3 hours, the site manager decided labouring wasn’t really for me and told my brother it might be best for everyone if I was switched to the office to help with resourcing!
What brought you to Design & Build?
I was lucky enough to find my job with Design & Build whilst I was still in the UK and getting ready to move to Australia. After a few interviews with Andy, Tom & the management team – it was clear that the way D&B approach things was in line with how I operate and I jumped at the chance to join. They even let me delay my start date for a few months so I could travel around once I arrived in Australia, before starting up!
What’s your favourite part of your job?
Day to day it is definitely the people. It makes it a lot easier to get up in the morning when you genuinely enjoy coming to work.
“Sam has been key in establishing Design & Build as a leading provider to civil / utility contractors in Australia. In the short time he’s been with us he’s established a number of key clients that will only go to him for some of the largest projects in NSW and Australia.
His recruiter insider results show that he continues to build trust with his clients and candidates and really is a true leader in his market. "
Alex Scott, Engineering Division Manager
What’s been your proudest achievement since working at Design & Build?
Aside from this promotion, I count myself lucky to have been able to secure several interesting high volume recruitment contracts on some pretty iconic projects – they will definitely live long in the memory!
What does becoming a lead consultant mean to you?
The part I’m most looking forward to is being able to mentor and guide the more junior consultants coming through. Earlier this year we launched our associate program so there is going to be some excellent opportunities for people wanting to take their first steps in recruitment. I’ve got a lot of battle scars and war stories over the years, so I hope to be able to help them on their way.
Can you provide a little more information on what you’ll be focusing on in your new role?
My aim is to continue to manage and grow our client base across the engineering construction sector as well as bring on new consultants to work alongside me – there’s plenty to get at and I’m looking forward to having a team to deliver with me.
