Over the past year, Victoria has experienced its largest-ever rail infrastructure pipeline, with more than $30 billion being invested into metropolitan and regional rail projects.

These projects include developing the Melbourne metro tunnel, a fast rail service between Geelong and the Melbourne CBD and a dedicated Airport line that will take commuters from the airport to the heart of Melbourne city. Furthermore, in the federal budget announcement earlier this month, one of the biggest ticket items was a $2 billion initial investment for the delivery of the Melbourne intermodal terminal; a terminal capable of accommodating the Inland Rail service running in and out of Melbourne.

All of these projects make it an exciting time for both the job market within Victorian Rail and the industry overall. Which makes it the perfect time for Design & Build to introduce our latest member to the Melbourne team, Chris McCutcheon! Chris has extensive recruitment experience both in the UK and Australia and will be focusing on growing and developing our rail client and candidate base in Victoria. We recently caught up with Chris during his first few weeks with D&B to find out a little bit more about his experience, what brought him to the D&B team and even his favourite Netflix show....find out below:

What first drew you to the recruitment industry?

Graduating in Transport Design during a recession with few job opportunities, I decided to think outside of the box. I joined a recruitment agency that operated in the Automotive/Transport sector, so I could see the opportunities before all the other candidates in the market. From day one I enjoyed the buzz around recruitment and never looked back!

What excites you most about working within recruitment?

It's exciting when you become recognised as a specialist and are fully absorbed in your sector, where you are the go-to person for both candidates and clients. I also enjoy helping companies grow and individuals fulfil their potential.

Within the Design & Build team you’ll be working within a new division, rail. What drew you to this particular role?

Just seeing the massive projects and huge investment across Australia right now in rail, it’s something I want to play a key part in. Design and Build already have a place in this market which I believe I can develop and grow.

A big part of your role will be growing and developing our Rail desk – how do you think the rail job market will change over the next year?

Every business that is involved in the rail sector's development plans is going to need to grow their teams with high calibre individuals, to keep on track (no pun intended) with the expectations and deliverables that have been set out. It is vital that they collaborate and create partnerships with the right businesses that can assist them.

What do you think is the biggest misconception about the Recruitment Industry?

That recruiters always have an unlimited amount of CVs we can just send over to clients, and that we don't invest a huge amount of time building relationships with the best individuals in the market. In fact, the opposite is true- investing in your relationships with clients and candidates is integral to becoming a successful recruiter.

What motivates you?

Making people happy and seeing the rewards from hard work

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

What is meant for you won’t pass you by!

What was your dream job when you were younger?

To be a car designer

When you’re not at work where are we most likely to find you?

In the gym, in a bar or trying new food at a new restaurant.

What are you currently watching/listening to/reading?

I've just finished watching The Serpent on Netflix, so I now need a new series to start!
