Continuing on from yesterday's celebrations and recognition of the company's achievements, we wanted to highlight the work of Sydney consultant Sam Carew, who has significantly contributed to Design & Build's success over the last financial year. Consistent positive client and candidate feedback, breaking Design & Build billing records and being promoted to Lead Consultant (all in the space of a year) have helped Sam take out the highly coveted Top Biller award. This award is given to the consultant who has made the most sales for the business over the last financial year, and the fact that Design & Build has had one of its most successful years to date with so many high performers, not only speaks to the amazing team we have but also to what Sam has achieved throughout the year.
We caught up with Sam this week to find out a little bit more about what winning the Top Biller award for 2021 means to him…
Congratulations on winning the Top Biller Award! What does winning this award mean to you?
It’s always great to be acknowledged for any awards, but one of the best things about the Design & Build team is that there are no egos. Last year was a cracker for everyone in the business, but we are back to the start now and I believe we are positioned to go even better next year!
Recruitment is a very changeable industry; while there are many highs there can be moments of frustration when variables change last minute. Do you have any coping mechanisms that help you when you feel discouraged?
Roll with the punches because throughout your time in recruitment, you are going to be faced with a lot of frustrations & challenging times. What’s important is that you learn from it and don’t take it to heart– take a step back, work out what went wrong and how you can improve it next time.
When starting a relationship with clients and candidates, what are your key priorities to ensure the relationship grows and develops?
Never make any assumptions on what you think you know, ask as many questions as possible and be honest with what you can commit to. Don’t be afraid to ask the tough questions early on in fact, ask them as soon as you can. When everyone is on the same page and clear on what the expectations are, it prevents the chance of surprises which can halt progress further down the track.
What’s your favourite part of your job?
There's a lot of different aspects that I enjoy and aside from the cheesy answer of the people I work with (which is definitely the best part!), I’d have to say acquiring new business and clients, and then delivering and turning them into long term relationships. Down the line, when they are picking up the phone to you first for any assistance – you know you have done something right.
What motivates you?
When you do things right in recruitment, you really are impacting people’s lives – there is nothing better than catching up with a candidate you placed 1-2 years down the line and hearing how you’ve helped them both professionally and personally.
Someone reached out to me on Linkedin recently that I placed about 7 years ago – which involved him changing industries and also moving countries. Whilst we had lost contact when I moved to Australia, he wanted to say thanks because he doesn’t think he would be where he is today without that initial job opportunity… that was pretty cool!
"Congratulations Sam on taking out the coveted Top Biller award. Whilst a significant achievement in its own right it should also be noted that Sam was also shortlisted for both the Consultant's Consultant award as well as the Director’s Choice award. Neither of these accomplishments were due to his billings alone, but his positive influence across the team and how he treats his clients, candidates and colleagues. Sam sets a great example for many of our team and I am looking forward to celebrating even more success with him over the coming years.
Congrats again Sam!"

What does career success look like to you?
That’s a tough one as success can come in so many different forms. For me, I’d say being better than what you were last year and never losing your motivation. In practice and looking at the next 12 months, I’d say success will be defined on continuing to grow the D&B brand in the Civil Infrastructure sector as well as building & developing a team around me.
What has been a professional highlight over the last financial year (in addition to this award) and what are your goals heading into the new financial year?
Being promoted earlier in the year is probably up there. In terms of the next 12 months, things couldn’t be tee’d up any better, I feel very lucky to be in an industry that’s going to benefit from significant investment, but where resourcing and identifying skill talent is going to be a challenge. We are working internally and with our key clients about what we can do to combat this, so I am looking forward to rolling out some new service offerings and hopefully cementing our place as one of Australias leading recruitment agencies in the engineering & construction sector.
