Design & Build are very excited to welcome Tim Chapman to the team, who will be joining Design & Build as our Queensland and Northern Territory State Manager! While we have always operated within the Queensland job market, having an experienced and dedicated leader like Tim at the helm, will allow us to further capitalise on the great opportunities within Queensland and the Northern Territory - especially within the built environment space - and further cement our vision in becoming 'Australia's most trusted recruitment agency'.
We caught up with Tim, during his first week with Design & Build, to find a little bit more about his new role with the team, what this will look like going forward and his goals for the Queensland/Northern Territory branch moving forward:
Welcome to Design & Build Tim! You’ve been appointed as our Queensland and Northern Territory State Manager -can you tell us a little bit more about your new role and the key things you’ll be working on?
Great to be here! I have been appointed as the QLD & NT state Manager, I will be taking a lead on building the capability throughout NT and QLD across; Construction, Engineering, Mining, Manufacturing, Design and support services.
I will also be looking to expand the ethics, consultative ability and culture that D&B has already built-in other states to bring a great capability to the northern region of Australia
What was it about the company & role that made you want to work for Design & Build?
D&B has a great reputation in the construction industry and I wanted to join a business that was well respected across the board and would allow me to bring that same consultative approach that D&B is known for here to QLD
The culture and benefits when working for D&B are also amazing. Especially in a high-intensity industry such as recruitment, it is great to have real flexibility and support from your team.
You’ve had extensive experience recruiting within the construction industry. What is it about construction that you enjoy recruiting for?
The people. I have found throughout my years recruiting, people in construction are down to earth individuals and I enjoy speaking to them on a daily basis.
You also get to help resource some amazing projects. It's a great feeling to drive past a completed project and be able to think to myself, how cool I helped find a Project Manager, Contracts Administrator, Site Manager etc for that awesome building.
"I am delighted to welcome Tim as the State Manager for QLD/NT. Having met first Tim over 3 years ago what came across then and now is how much drive and care Tim has for the industry and doing the right thing by client, candidate, and colleague. Tim’s values are closely alighted to Design & Build which will continue to support our vision in becoming Australia’s most trusted recruitment agency.
I along with the wider Design & Build team are looking forward to working with Tim and helping him grow a successful D&B team out of Brisbane supporting our construction, engineering and property clients."
Andy McGregor - Managing Director
This is an exciting role for Design & Build, as it’s establishing our first State Manger in QLD. Why do you think QLD is such an important base – especially within construction and engineering?
QLD is an amazing place. I believe in the coming years we will see a real ramp-up of international and interstate migration, especially considering the construction, mining and manufacturing industries are continuing to grow at a rapid rate and will consequently require top talent.
When recruiting within a new market or location, what do you think is most important when reaching out to new clients and candidates?
Being humble and showing sincerity in you what you do and say and demonstrating that I care about what I do and who I do it for.
The clients and candidates come before anything else, so you need to give them the best experience coupled with strong communication and the rest will follow.
What motivates you to work hard?
The thank-you you receive from a client when you have helped them source a new team member that is going to improve the capability of the business or the thank-you you receive after helping a candidate find a great place to work is a great motivator to continue striving to do the best for your clients and candidates. We can't forget in recruitment that what we do affects the lives of those we work with substantially.
What are your key goals moving forward, both for yourself and the Queensland/Northern Territory branch?
My key goals for the QLD/NT office moving forward is ensuring we do the best for our clients and candidates, that we build a great team and that we enjoy what we do.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
To listen more than you speak. You were given two ears and one mouth for a reason.
When you’re not at work where are we most likely to find you?
I’m still attempting to live my rugby glory days in my 30’s, so more than likely on the pitch for the Brisbane Irish Rugby Club and if not on the pitch, then at the clubhouse.
What’s a song that will always put you in a good mood?
Red Hot Chilli Peppers - Hump De Bump
