Job Description

Design & Build is seeking a Senior Geotechnical Engineer for a Leading Mining Company. 

This is a Senior Opportunity to grow and lead a team of professional engineers on a world class, underground zinc operation.

Key responsibilities of the Senior Geotechnical Engineer will include:
  • Provide leadership of the geotechnical engineering team              
  • Develop standards relating to ground control, support, mining methods and extraction sequencing
  • Ensure that a Ground Control Management Plan in line with the statutory guidelines is developed, implemented and maintained
  • Develop and maintain systems to monitor and evaluate geotechnical conditions and ensure the efficiency and continuous improvement of these systems
  • Monitor rock deformations, stress and seismicity
  • Monitor support and reinforcement systems
  • Undertake geotechnical analysis utilising Rock Mass Classification systems, empirical methods and numerical modelling
  • Conduct formal reviews of stope performance focusing on rock mechanics issues
  • Analyse backfill QA/QC results to determine fill quality in stopes and identify issues
  • Provide input into mine planning to ensure excavation designs, sequence, pillars, ground support etc. are appropriate to local conditions.  Ensure that “lessons learnt” from previous stoping are incorporated into design standards
  • Provide geotechnical engineering input into mine design and long term planning
  • Ensure that all documentation relating to ground support and geotechnical issues are reviewed on a predetermined basis
  • Ensure that all required geotechnical reports are developed within agreed timeframes
  • Research and Development – Direct internal research and development projects in areas of ground support, backfill, instrumentation and mining methods
  • Appoint and manage all external consultants / contractors
To be successful in this role, you will have the below;
  • Minimum of 6 years in underground mining, particularly in the area of rock mechanics
  • Experience in geotechnical data collection and processing
  • Demonstrated ability in the identification, analysis and resolution of rock mechanics issues
Further Qualifications and Licences required for this role;
  • Recognised and relevant Tertiary Degree, i.e. Bachelor of Science / Engineering (Mining, Geology or Geological / Geotechnical Engineering)
  • Postgraduate degree or industry accepted further qualification in geotechnical or related field
  • Current C Class Licence
  • At least one of professional organisation memberships (i.e. AusIMM, IEAust, ISRM, AGS, EAGCG)
  • Regular publications / presentations at professional forums
