  About the Principal Electrical Engineer
Reporting to the Engineering Manager, the Principal Electrical Engineer’s primary role and responsibilities will be for the overall design and delivery of Electrical Engineering solutions.
During the different project phases such as but not limited to design, development, and commissioning, they will coach & mentor team members of the Engineering Team to ensure personal growth, and the team skillset is at the forefront of the company’s future planning.
You will work closely with the Engineering Manager, Project Managers and other stakeholders to ensure projects are delivered safely, efficiently, and in line with client and company expectations.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  • Lead and drive the technical development of the Engineering Team through coaching, mentoring, and embedding industry best practice.
  • Lead the Engineering Teams support to site during installation, testing and commissioning of Electrical Designs.
  • Formulate and execute procedures designed to enhance safety, ensure the quality of project delivery, and optimize the efficiency of the team.
  • Monitor progress against project milestones and proactively address delays or obstacles with the support of the Engineering Manager.
  • Assist the Engineering Team to Specify, Design & Commission Engineering solutions.
  • Assist others with performing and reviewing engineering calculations to ensure compliance to legislation and client requirements.
  • Review of work undertaken by Engineers and Designers in the Engineering Team for compliance with relevant standards and the Professional Engineers Registration Acts.
  • Assist the company’s wider team with estimates of effort required to undertake Engineering activities for the purpose of quoting.
  • Develop and maintain system documentation including Design Specifications, Test Plans, and Operational Manuals in line with company and client requirements.
  • Stay updated with the latest relevant Engineering technologies and industry trends.
  • Travel to client sites for system installation, commissioning, and maintenance, with occasional living-away requirements, as necessary.
  • Support the Engineering Manager with Risk Management regarding the work the business takes on - is it within their skillset, can they deliver as per the requested timelines, do they have all the tools on hand to achieve the outcomes.
  • Identify training opportunities to build up the Engineering Teams capability.
  • Focused on delivering high quality, client centered outcomes.
  • Support the company’s Projects/Project Management, Maintenance and Automation Teams with any Electrical Engineering queries they come across.
   
Experience, Skills and Knowledge
  • Degree qualified in Electrical Engineering.
  • Proven minimum 10 years proven experience as a Principal Electrical Engineer or similar role.
  • Chartered Professional Engineer Status with Engineers Australia or Professionals Australia along with state registration for Victoria (RPEV) and Queensland (RPEQ).
  • Excellent understanding of AS61439 series and switchboard design and verification.
  • Excellent understanding of AS60079 series with proven experience of classifying Hazardous Areas and selection of Equipment for installation onto a hazardous area.
  • Experience with PowerCAD or similar platform for Power System Analysis.
  • Experience with Arc Flash analysis and applicable standards.
  • Basic AutoCAD skills.
  • Appreciation for industrial automation and control systems (PLC, SCADA, DCS, Motor Control).
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Proactive, flexible and driven to succeed.
